The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award (Rotary International Personal Reference for Toby)

Equipping and empowering individuals aged between 14 to 24 to achieve their personal best, take ownership of their own goals and life choices and become actively involved within their community on a local and global level. Fully voluntary, designed own programs and undertaken in own time.

  • 2019/2020 – Gold Award (highest level) (on schedule to complete early 2020). Must complete 52 weeks/1 hour per week of a skill, physical recreation and voluntary service. In addition, 2 adventurous journeys (hikes – 4 days/3 nights each) were planned and undertaken. Finally, a residential project was undertaken (travelled to Cambodia to build houses and assist with farming).
  • 2018 – Silver Award (completed). Completed 26 weeks/1hr per week each of a skill; physical recreation and in voluntary service. In addition, 2 adventurous journeys (canoe trips – 3 days/2 nights each) were undertaken.
  • 2017 – Bronze Award (completed). Completed 26 weeks/1 hour per week of physical recreation; 13 weeks/1 hour per week each of a skill and in voluntary service. In addition, 2 adventurous journeys (hikes – 2 days/1 night each) were undertaken

Rotary International Junior Community Award

This Award engages Year 6 students (age 11) in four main areas of endeavour – Community Service, Social Experience, Physical Recreation and Skill Development.

  • Award completed in 2014. Completed 10 weeks/1 hour per week each in Community Service and Skills, as well as 10 weeks/ 2 hours per week of Physical Recreation. Social experience included 2 hours of Community commemoration, 2 hours of cultural exchange, 3 hours of the Arts, 1 hour in a Community meeting and 1.5 hours of a religious and spiritual experience. Each of these experiences required a 1-page written report.


  • Fundraised and participated in a 10-day educational and community service trip to Cambodia to assist local communities in constructing family dwellings and two green houses (2019)
  • Scouts Australia – 7 years of community service, camping, hiking and achievement of badges and reflection of skills along the way.

  • 2016, 2017, 2018 – Represented St. Peter’s Lutheran College (SPLC) in Inter-school reading competition.
  • 2016 – Performed in musical theatre production of ‘Kaleidoscope’ in 2 leading roles with a 5 minute monologue. Involved 3 months of rehearsals and 3 formal performances.
  • 2017 – Participated in 5-week ‘Ironbark’ school camp at an outdoor recreation centre on 600 hectares of bush including a working farm. Learnt values of responsibility, giving your best, respect, cooperation and understanding of faith. 24 hour solo overnight camp undertaken for self-reflection. No access to any electronics during the entire camp.


  • Have been lucky to travel with my family within Australia. I have travelled internationally to New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Canada and the USA 5 times. Had a wonderful volunteer experience in Cambodia in 2019. Each experience is different, meeting people is wonderful and there is always learning happening whether I am a tourist, helping people in need or participating in my favourite sport, baseball.

Toby and his family have been totally committed to Toby pursuing his dream of playing College Baseball since he was 12 years old and this is evident in their commitment to him playing regularly in the USA between 2015 and 2019 even though he lives in Australia.

Selected and toured the USA with 4 different touring teams from Australia

  • Teams represented: Victorian Kookaburras (twice), NSW Razorbacks from Ric Wickham’s Junior Baseball Coaching Academy and Queensland Dolphins
  • On these tours in 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2019, I played baseball in 7 States, against 22 teams from 11 different States
  • Played at well-known venues including Ripken Aberdeen, Ripken Myrtle Beach, Cooperstown All Star Village, Airhog Stadium Grand Prairie, Coastal Carolina University
  • Undertaken college visits as part of tours meeting Athletic and Academic staff plus undertaking training sessions at Sam Houston State University, Chapman University, Coker College and University of South Carolina
  • Attended camps at USA Diamond Nation, New Jersey and Elite Sports Academy, Emmaus
